Airline Jobs – Vehicle / Equipment Mechanic

Duties

These airline equipment mechanics are responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, upgrading, and maintaining a wide range of airline or airport vehicles and equipment. This includes baggage carts and tractors, company vehicles, aircraft towing vehicles and equipment, fuel trucks, and more. Mechanics may be required to work on a variety of engine types, fuel systems, and vehicles. Working with computer diagnostic equipment, wrenches, voltage meters, and other tools, the job of a mechanic is to ensure that vehicles and machines are in safe and working condition.

Challenges

Mechanics occasionally have to work outside, and in adverse weather conditions. Shop accidents involving machinery, equipment, or tools can occur resulting in injuries. Vehicles and machinery are becoming increasingly reliant on computers and mechanics must keep up with these advances. Most mechanics wear a uniform and the work is often extremely grimy.

Qualifications

Job candidates should have a familiarity with all handheld tools, pneumatic wrenches, air compressors, hydraulic jacks, grease guns, voltage meters, and more. Many shops require that you have your own tools. The ability to lift up to 70 pounds is recommended.

Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Some companies require mechanics be at least 18 years old, have a valid driver’s license, and a clean driving record. Vocational training in auto mechanics is preferred.

Training

Vocational training is available for mechanics, but employers generally expect the job prospect to have already completed that training, or else have equivalent on-the-job experience. Novice mechanics may be hired at less pay and learn on-the-job.

Salary and Benefits

Pay for vehicle and equipment mechanics ranges from $13.00-$19.00 per hour. Benefits may include paid vacation, dental and life insurance, sick leave, retirement plan, free or reduced airfare for employees and immediate family members.
