Unit Aviation Manager

Duties

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Unit Aviation Managers are responsible for every aspect of the aviation program including developing policies, safety, managing budgets, developing training programs, inspecting contracts, and overseeing all aviation-related services. The Unit Aviation Manager is the liaison person between all agencies for the use and planning of aircraft for emergency or aid situations, the coordination of military aviation responses, and for any reason, that aircraft are needed regarding BLM managed lands. The Unit Aviation Manager is also responsible for the Aviation Safety and Training Program which determines if and when there’s a need for aviation training and if so, the appropriate aviation programs are put into place. In the event of any aviation incidents or accidents that may occur, the Unit Aviation Manager must oversee the investigations. The Unit Aviation Manager works closely with the Federal Aviation Administration whenever necessary. Frequent travel in government aircraft is often part of the job.

Challenges

This job often requires a lot of time away from home to remote locations. The Unit Aviation Manager must work with a variety of people, some of whom may be difficult or challenging.

Requirements

Applicants must be United States citizens. Previous on-the-ground wildfire experience is preferred. A minimum of a Master’s or equivalent graduate degree in business law, business administration, accounting, commercial law, economics, industrial management, finance, engineering, statistics, transportation, traffic management, motor mechanics, or related fields is required.

Training

The Bureau of Land Management will provide some training on the job.

Scheduling

Depending on where in the country the position is located, travel of up to twenty-one days at a time spent at a remote location may be required. Authorized travel expenses are included.
